Can Panic Attacks Be Avoided?

Many people that suffer from panic attacks would like nothing more than to avoid them. They do not like the feelings that they have with panic attacks and often think that they are dying. They may experience trips to the emergency room to make sure that there is not something else going on. Panic attacks seem to take over their lives and control everything that they do. They constantly look for a way to avoid having a panic attack and losing control.

Change your Thinking


Perhaps the easiest and most effective way to avoid panic attacks is to change the way that we think. Panic attacks are the result of thinking that something bad is going to happen. We constantly worry about what is going to happen and when. This leads us to work ourselves up into frenzy and only makes matters worse.

Start writing a journal when a panic attack occurs. Immediately after the attack, write about it. Think about what you were doing and what you were thinking about right before the attack occurred. As you begin to keep track of this information, you will find that it is the way that you are thinking that is causing the attacks. Then, you can start to change your thinking and look for positive situations and thoughts. Once you know that you are not dying and that nothing terrible is going to happen, you can start to avoid thinking these thoughts and in the end, your panic attacks will be decreased or eliminated.

Seek Help


Most people suffering from panic attacks do not tell anyone. They do not want others to know that there is a problem. This is the worst thing that you can do for yourself. It is important to seek out help with your attacks. If you can find help and get proper treatment, you will be able to avoid further attacks.

Counseling or therapy is often very effective in treating and avoiding panic attacks. A therapist can help you get to the bottom of your panic and find out what is causing them. There is most often an underlying cause or something going on in a person’s life that makes them panic and worry excessively. Once these irrational thoughts and feelings are removed, the panic attacks can be prevented and dealt with much more easily. Talk with your family care physician and they can point you in the right direction in regards to treatment and managing your panic attacks.
